Lessons I’ve Learned Running a Creative Business
Yesterday I shared a post about a few lessons I’ve learned running a creative business, and the response honestly surprised me. The comments and conversations that followed were thoughtful, honest, and incredibly relatable for so many other creatives and small business owners.
Yesterday I shared a post about a few lessons I’ve learned running a creative business, and the response honestly surprised me. The comments and conversations that followed were thoughtful, honest, and incredibly relatable for so many other creatives and small business owners.
It reminded me how many of us are figuring this out as we go.
This post is an expansion of some of those reflections. As a calligraphy artist and live engraving specialist working with weddings, events, and brands across Northern California, I’ve learned a few lessons over time that apply not only to the wedding industry but to creative entrepreneurs in general.
Running a creative business is rewarding, but it’s rarely as glamorous as people imagine. Behind every finished piece of calligraphy or engraved keepsake is a lot of quiet work: refining your craft, communicating with clients, building relationships, and showing up consistently over time.
Here are a few lessons that have stayed with me.
Consistency matters more than motivation.
One of the biggest misconceptions about running a creative business is that motivation drives success. In reality, consistency is what makes the difference.
There are plenty of days when I don’t feel particularly motivated to post on Instagram, pitch venues, improve my website SEO, or follow up with inquiries. But doing something small every day tends to move the business forward more than waiting for inspiration.
For creative entrepreneurs, consistency can look like:
Posting your work regularly so people know what you offer
Reaching out to potential collaborators or venues
Updating your website or portfolio with recent projects
Following up with inquiries and past clients
Continuing to practice and improve your craft
Showing up consistently is often the biggest driver of growth.
Relationships matter more than algorithms.
Social media platforms and algorithms change constantly. What works for visibility on Instagram or TikTok today may look completely different next year.
What doesn’t change nearly as much are relationships.
Some of the best opportunities I’ve had as a calligraphy artist and creative business owner have come from relationships with wedding planners, venue teams, photographers, other artists, and fellow small business owners.
Building a network of trusted collaborators can often have a bigger impact on your business than chasing viral content.
Not every inquiry is meant to become a client.
One of the most important mindset shifts in running a creative business is understanding that not every inquiry will turn into a booking.
Sometimes people are gathering information. Sometimes they are comparing options or researching vendors. And sometimes the timing simply isn’t right.
Instead of trying to convert every inquiry, it’s more helpful to focus on identifying clients who are genuinely aligned with your work.
Some green flags that often indicate a great client relationship include:
They reference specific pieces of your work that resonated with them
They trust your expertise as an artist
They communicate clearly and respectfully
They are excited about the process, not just the final product
Working with the right clients often leads to better projects, better relationships, and stronger word-of-mouth referrals.
Final thoughts
Running a creative business can feel lonely sometimes. You’re making decisions, experimenting, and figuring things out in real time. Most of the progress isn’t visible to anyone else.
If you’re a creative entrepreneur reading this, my encouragement is simple: keep going. The path rarely looks clear while you’re in it, but small steps taken consistently have a way of compounding over time. Your craft will improve, your network will grow, and the right clients will start to recognize the value of what you do.
